Scotland

A trip to Scotland, December 2019. During this break I took the opportunity to take photographs of the natural landscapes, focusing on reflections of light, colour and intensity. Discovering new mountainous areas, beaches, seascapes, and waterfalls- this series of photographs now act as reference images for both illustration and also as a colour scheme inspiration. In some aspects of my practice I like to incorporate landscapes I’ve seen or photographs I’ve taken into the composition of my work, one of which I have displayed below.

This piece is a double exposure style portrait of a girl, with some of the scenery I discovered around Scotland entangled through her hair. Done in black fine liner, I wanted to create a contrast between realism and pattern. The lines of her hair are more simplistic rather than hyper real, creating a sense of flow throughout the portrait. Upon closer inspection you can see landscapes containing trees, houses, lakes, rocks and stones, and mountains.

Landscapes ranging from dramatic lightings, to flowing oceans, and burning forests-scapes. Below are some calmer images that emit tranquility; the chaotic crash of waterfalls at Glen Nevis; intense colours produced by sunset burning through clouds; and the awe inspiring effect of glistening crystals.

Through this trip I also sketched various landscapes…

Pen illustration from around Scotland-landscapes and countryside features.
