3D Drawing

The outcome of experimenting with recycled materials- a giant butterfly sculpture.

Experimenting with recycled materials- creating sustainable 3D drawings. This process was very similar to doodling- except instead of using a pen or a pencil on paper, we used physical 3D materials to mould and transform into sculptural pieces. I started on a path of creating small creatures- butterflies, caterpillars, trees- beginning a new theme of bug-related models. After working on a small scale- I decided to branch out, creating a giant butterfly out of recycled materials. This included cardboard, newspaper, bottle tops, string, and many smaller butterflies cut from the pages of old books. I decided to produce this huge butterfly as a comment on sustainability, and plastic pollution in our environment. The natural world is getting contaminated with our litter- creating literal litter bugs.

3D drawing helps you to think specially and visually- you are able to mould the materials in a physical way rather than thinking about the effect of a certain mark before making it on paper. I feel that this process certainly helped me with my confidence in approaching new techniques of mark making, breaking out of my “safe comfort zone”. Since this project, I have been more open minded creatively, thinking constantly about how I can tackle new projects using a variety of methods- both 2D and 3D.
