Textile Workshop

Textile workshop inspired by current research/experiments with symbolism relating to the theme of “Becoming”. Snakes are a symbol of transformation- shedding their skin to allow for further growth. This idea began as a series of sketches/illustrations in my sketchbook- working with a variety of designs, and getting used to the range of shapes snakes bodies can make. I decided on this shape as I felt it would be relatively challenging for my first experiment with 3D textiles. The process consisted of drawing up the design as a paper template; transferring that template onto material (a top and a bottom); and finally stitching and stuffing, until the whole body had been created.

I like to see this mini project as a practice of making my design ideas 3D; having to think about the shape and movement of the drawing in the mindset of a 3D maker, rather than a simple sketch on paper. I feel that this transferable skill is equally as important in both aspects – thinking more about the 3D shape whilst sketching 2D, and vice versa.
