Map of thoughts… visual studies task

Mapping out the links between imagery and ideas during the process of creating my final piece “overgrown”. I reminisced back to my research for my essay on the development of the representation of the human condition throughout art history, detailing the glitch art phenomena in contemporary artworks. This idea of manipulated and image, exposing its imperfections through digital means has been a recurring theme in my work throughout this project brief- allowing me to reduce various versions of the same image that convey subtlety different meaning. Moving on from this, focusing on symbolism- another heavily recurring theme I like to work with. Focusing on the theme of utopia, plant and natural symbolism is a prominent topic I’ve been playing with- which in turn affects the colour palette i use. Thus, the dominant colour in my work is green- with the odd orange and red to balance out the composition.

On this map are also sticky noted with key words and concepts I’ve explored, such as : LIFE, VITAE, SEMIOTICS, COLOUR THEORY, GLITCH, HUMAN CONDITION, EMPATHY, WELLBEING AND MENTAL HEALTH…..

This is more of a superficial overview of the topics i have explored and researched, but i feel that it provides a base layer of insight into the thought process and links within my current practice. I have found that there are natural links between illustrations produced weeks ago and today, without meaning to follow those specific links. A piece I created about self love and growth is very similar in style to my OVERGROWN piece, Linking also to the topic of wellbeing and mental health.

This map also touches slightly on some artists that have been influential in my practice, including Rosa Menkman (glitch phenomenon); Alex Gray (psychedelic art/colour inspiration); and Abi Stevens (symbolism).

This map is A0 in size and currently taped to a door in my living room, which has also acted as my replacement studio space during quarantine.
